Paul Della Villa, John Maurycy and Mechelle Smith will be inducted into the Schenectady City School District Athletic Hall of Fame on Sept. 11 at Proctors Theatre.
The Hall of Fame selection committee announced the 2017 class Friday. The 20th annual event will also include a legacy tribute honoring coach Larry Mulvaney’s 1967 Mont Pleasant football team that went 8-0 and was ranked No. 1 in the state.
Della Villa was an all-American running back for Mont Pleasant’s 1963 team who later competed in football at Boston College and with the semi-pro Quincy Giants. He was previously inducted into the Mont Pleasant Sports Hall of Fame and Capital Region Football Hall of Fame.
Maurycy was a key member of Mont Pleasant’s 1954 state championship golf team and a standout basketball player with the Red Raiders. He qualified for three U.S. Opens and one PGA Championship, and is a member of the Northeastern New York PGA Hall of Fame.
Smith competed in basketball and threw the shot put and discus while at Linton, and went on to have a brilliant career in taekwondo. She won three national taekwondo titles and was an Olympic alternate in 1988.
